This 2nd series of flashcards, one from each act, evidence ways in which Shakespeare has highlighted Macbeth as a tragic hero. A tragedy play in Shakespeare’s time begins with qualities in a hero that are admired. The hero is loved and there is an element of celebrity and role model. Then a weakness is highlighted and manipulated to bring down the hero with tragic consequences. However, each quote also has relevance to other themes. The purpose of memorising the quotes is to aid a deeper knowledge of the play so that when answering a question the student can move around the play with ease. The quote is on the left-hand side of each card. Prompts for discussion are on the right-hand side of each card. The quotes also have relevance in the discussion of other themes, especially questions that explore the characterisation of Macbeth and plot development. This practice assessment paper has been created to aid learners in their preparation for forthcoming Entry Level Functional Skills assessments, with a particular focus on enhancing reading comprehension skills and bolstering confidence. The paper is colourfully structured to guide learners through the assessment format, foster familiarity, pinpoint areas for improvement and enhance engagement. Centered around a fictional football match, the assessment comprises two sections: a Refreshments Menu and a Sports Report. Learners are tasked with comprehensively reading both texts before answering ten questions for each. Additionally, a Marking Sheet is provided to assist tutors in evaluating learners’ achievements. Importantly, there is no pass or fail component to this assessment; its sole purpose is to offer support and guidance. This particular unit of work includes a selection of engaging theory tasks (see below) that will enable them to gain new knowledge of this popular cuisine. Learners will then have the opportunity to plan, prepare and follow a Pizza recipe and method. They will finally self-assess their performance, receive feedback from an observer and set targets as part of their overall evaluation. The 8 tasks are set as follows: What is Pizza - Introductory small writing task that promotes group discussion. History of the Pizza - A true and False Quiz that will educate learners on facts of this world foods origin (answers on the last page) Types of Pizza - An activity that requires the learner to match up ingredients with the correct pizza name (Italian to English). The Perfect Pizza - Learners to work in pairs to investigate alternative ingredients and how they can accommodate lactose and wheat intolerances. Health and Safety - A task that enables learners to highlight health, hygiene and safety awareness in the Kitchen. Learners will have the opportunity to plan, prepare and follow a ‘Fresh Scone’ recipe method. They will finally self-assess their performance, receive feedback from an observer and set targets as part of their overall evaluation. The 8 tasks are set as follows: The history of the Scone - Learners to read out the text to one another, debate on how best to pronounce the word ‘scone’ and then ask and answers questions in a later task. Fill in the missing ingredients using the pictures as a clue and discuss the ingredients used in this particular recipe, i.e. no eggs or the use of lemon juice!. This is also an excellent opportunity to discuss alternative elements for lactose intolerance, vegans etc. Reorganise the jumbled up method into the correct order and attach it to a separate sheet. This could be made easier depending on the level of the learner by cutting two or three of the steps out together. Tutor to cut out the Question Cards and distribute them out to the group. Each learner can then take turns answering and asking questions to one another. Over to you - Practical Element, learners will pair up to follow a method and cook fresh scones using the ingredients mentioned. Self-assessment - A written evaluation, including guided questioning. This 4th series of flashcards, one from each act, evidence ways in which Shakespeare has explored the theme of ambition in the play. The theme focuses on the negative impact of unbridled ambition having the power to destroy. The three sisters played on this element of ambition, it was their weapon. The strongest overt references are in Act 1, and so for this set there are three cards linked to Act 1. However, there are subtle inferences to ambition as destructive in Acts 2-5 that are worth remembering should there be an essay question that asks the student to make points about ambition from the play as a whole.
